We stumbled upon this gem by accident. Joe had ordered the movie channels on digital cable for the summer, since we both enjoy flaking in front of the tv and the summer offerings were less than enticing. After watching some movie the first week we flipped to another channel, encountering what we thought was the middle of another movie. We were instantly sucked into the characters and laughing outloud, wondering what the heck we were watching and not wanting it to end.
So, what was this magic? It was a new HBO series called Flight of the Conchords. It follows the escapades of Bret and Jemaine, two guys from New Zealand who have moved to New York to make it big with their digi-folk band. They have one stalker fan, a bumbling manager who works for the New Zealand Consulate and their only advisor on life in NY is their friend Dave, who owns a pawnshop and lives with his parents.
Oh, and did I mentioned at least once an episode they break into spontaneous song? With lyrics like "Love is like a roll of tape", how can a person help but laugh? Oh, and who can forget the beloved children's series "Albie the Racist Dragon".
Now, I will point out this show will not have the same effect on everyone. Joe and I are big fans of really dry, off the wall, subtle humour, so if you're looking for slapstick or jokes so obvious you'd have to be dead not to get them, this is not the show for you.
